How to Support Your Child Through Depression
Parents can help children work through challenging emotions associated with depression by providing a safe place for them to openly share and express their feelings. Parents can encourage children to share about their feelings by asking open ended questions while refraining from giving advice or being judgemental.
Additionally, parents can help support their child through depression by encouraging them to engage in activities that foster a sense of meaning and joy. For example, parents can encourage their child to invite a friend over for a playdate, spend time as a family, or play outside.
Exercise and sleep also play a key role in our mental health. Studies have shown that exercise can help decrease symptoms of depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. Encouraging your child to engage in simple and easy exercise habits such as going for a walk, stretching, dancing, or playing a game/sport with friends can have a positive impact on their mental health.
Likewise, helping your child get an adequate amount of sleep by encouraging good sleep hygiene practices can also have a significant impact on your child’s mental health. This includes but is not limited to; turning electronics off 1-2 hours before bed, sleeping in a comfortable environment, using the bed for sleep only, and engaging in calming activities leading up to bedtime.
